Smart grid presents many opportunities to meet our nation’s energy capacity needs, but also it presents some very daunting challenges to the industry. A recent report from the Center of Creative Leadership titled “The Leadership Challenge in the Energy Sector” highlighted these challenges and stated that “energy leaders know they operate in volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous environments. What may be less apparent are the skills they need to succeed.”

Five years ago, Central Rural Electric Cooperative and its generation and transmission cooperative developed a vision of converting all substation communications to fiber. The goal was to bring CREC’s grid one step closer to a smart grid. On June 29, the vision became a reality when the final step of the conversion was complete.
