Central Rural Electric Cooperative works around the clock, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to restore power to customers affected by an outage. If you are are without power click here to submit an outage or call 405-372-2884 or 800-375-2884. Here are some helpful tips in the event of an electric outage.
Before an outage:
- Have a battery-powered flashlight and radio handy, and make sure you have spare batteries.
- Set your refrigerator and freezer to the coldest setting. This will help keep your food cold longer. During the outage, try to open the doors as few times as possible.
- Create a reserve water supply. Fill extra pitchers with water for drinking. You can fill your bathtub with water that should only be used for sanitation purposes.
- Have a backup source of heating fuel, as regular sources may be cut off. Having a wood burning fireplace, wood burning stove, or gas stove can help you keep at least one room livable.
- Let your faucets drip; this reduces the chance of them freezing.
- If you have medication that requires refrigeration check with your pharmacist for guidance on proper storage.
- Make sure you know how to manually open your electric garage door.
During an outage:
- If you decide to use candles or lanterns for light, do so with caution and keep combustibles far away.
- To protect against possible voltage irregularities that could occur when the power is restored, make sure all sensitive electronic equipment is unplugged.
After an outage:
- Use caution when going outside after the storm. Power lines could be down and hidden by snow, trees or debris. Never attempt to touch or move down power lines and keep your children and pets away.
- Check on and help your neighbors.
- Do not touch anything power lines are touching including tree branches or fences. Always assume a downed line is a live line, and call 405-372-2884 to let CREC know of downed lines in your area.
